John Butler Trio - www.johnbutlertrio.com John’s a great friend of mine and Australia’s biggest independent act. He’s taken me on lots of tours and been a real supporter from day one. Also a freo boy, I’ve known him since we both used to busk the Fremantle streets. Though then, as now he did way better than me.
Seth Lakeman - www.sethlakeman.co.uk
A dear friend from Devon, South West England. Seth is taking the UK by storm with his contemporary folk. He’s an amazing musician, singer and songwriter. Signed to Relentless (EMI) he was nominated for a Mercury prize in 2005 and after selling 150,000 + records is well on his way into crossing over into mainstream. One of my most favourite artists in the word. Another person who has helped me out with great supports.
Dave Johnson - www.myspace.com/davejohnson
Dave Johnson has been a good friend and musical accomplice of mine since I was 20. We first met after he walked past a pub when I was playing “Born With A Broken Heart” and was so moved by the song he came in for a beer and to say hi. Dave was in the original “True Believers” (I stole the name from a band we were in together that played every Wednesday at JB ORiellys in Leederville for 4 years!) and has been a huge influence and guide on me as a songwriter.
Check out his stuff, a beautiful songwriter and singer.
The Waifs - www.thewaifs.com.au
Another great independent act. The first if you like.. they showed us all how to do it in OZ without a label or airplay. When they’re on they are an absolutely unstoppable live act. Great songwriters, musicians and performers they also took me under their wing with great tours in OZ and the UK. The real thing you’ll dig em.
Rob Sawyer - www.robsawyer.com.au
Rob is one of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen, and a great guy to boot. Alongside my other good friend Loren, we have done a heap of tours together. With his band he rocks as well – even dipping into a little bit fo the ol’ punk a rama. He’s sure to be an artist that makes waves in the years to come
Loren - www.loren.com.au
Loren is probably my longest held musical accomplice and friend in the music industry. We met at my best friends funeral (his cousin) and we formed a band called Motherfunk.
I was 19, Loren was 18. We played around Perth for about 2 years and built up a pretty good fan base if I do say so myself. In fact John Butler used to come to our gigs – and this was before he even sang. When Motherfunk broke up Loren went his way and I went mine but we both kept playing music. We met up again when in about 2001 when I was playing a show in Brisbane where Loren had moved to and we’ve been interconnected ever since. Loren and I do heaps and heaps of shows together, we’ve done two acoustic tour just the two of us, and Loren has saved the day on bass too a couple of times.
Its always great to share the stage with him and I love it that our careers have become so linked. But Loren is fantastic artist in his own right. One of the best singers in Australia he’s no slouch either in the song writing department. A wonderful artist.
Dan Sultan - www.dansultan.com
A very exciting young artist of aboriginal descent Dan is like Elvis on stage. All charisma, good looks and attitude – with an absolutely amazing rich and beautiful voice too. He’s got the voice for country crooning and he knows how to rock – I love it. He was nominated for a Deadly Award in 2006 and is someone to keep your eye on as he’s winning fans every day. Again a really nice guy too.
The Pilgram Brothers - www.pigrambrothers.com.au
The Piggies are one of australias best bands. Hailing from Broome their music sings of the Kimberly and all its wonder. Steve Pigram is like an aboriginal Bob Dylan or something. If you are lucky enough to hear them play (they don’t like leaving Broome too much – why would you ) you’ll be addicted.
MusicPlug - www.musicplug.net
Australias best online music store. All the above artists are available there and heaps more of others doing the independent thing. Secure delivery and all that jazz. Check it out. You might something cool.
